Del Toro Does Death

Posted on 18 August 2008 by LoryGil

Cronos DVD Cover

Guillermo Del Toro has been making art-film fans froth at the mouth ever since he blew our minds with Pan’s Labyrinth in 2006. Remembering that Hellboy wasn’t that bad of a movie, and that Blade II was actually better than the first, we all went out an rented The Devil’s Backbone and wept with joy that someone finally figured out how to make a really artistic ghost movie. Then we “Netflixed” Mimic and gave ourselves paper cuts on our eyelids, just to feel better after sitting through that crap. But hey, at least those creepy bug dudes looked really cool. Easy Listening at it’s Best

Posted on 12 August 2008 by LoryGil

Old Time Horror

Do you sit in your work cubby all day listening to the classic rock station? Are you getting sick of hearing Alex Cohen’s golden voice on Day to Day? Do you sometimes wish you could travel back to the 1940s in order to listen to the radio shows of “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet” or, “The Adventures of Superman?” Well, buckle your shoes and tighten your petticoat because you’re about to go on a ride!

I’ve always wanted to listen to old time radio programs, but I could only find them as compilation CDs for $49.99. I’m just not sure I’m willing to shell out that kind of cash for something I’m not sure I’ll even like (seeing as how I’m not 70-years-old and, therefore, don’t remember the ‘ good ol’ days’).

Much to my surprise and exhilaration, I discovered a podcast of old time radio shows called, “Old Time Radio Shows” by Humphrey and Camardella Media Productions. They have various radio podcasts of Science Fiction, Horror, Thriller, Detective and genres of shows ranging from 1932 with Witch’s Tale, the first horror series made for radio, all the way through the early 1980s with Canadian and British radio programs.

Mystery Radio ShowWhile researching for this story, I discovered a plethora of Old Time Radio Shows that you can listen to. If you don’t have iTunes on your computer at work, fear not. Most of the shows stream through QuickTime after you click the “download this episode” link. There are a few that allow you to download episodes to your computer’s audio player, which I like because you can burn yourself a nice CD of radio shows to take with you on road trips.
Happy Listening!

Radiolovers.com This site is my favorite. They have shows listed by genre as well as alphabetically so if you don’t know the name of a show, you just want to listen to a western, this site will help you through that.

Free Old Time Radio Show This site is O.K. The selection is somewhat limited and they only lists shows alphabetically. One thing that makes them stand out is that they have the old, “Adventures of Superman,” which seems to be hard to find.

Old Time Radio Network This site has a whole lot of shows, but they only list them alphabetically and you have to use RealPlayer, which isn’t a problem unless you aren’t allowed to download applications on your work computer (my work PC came with QuickTime, so I am assuming that everyone else’s does too).

Free Old Time Radio Downloads This site is good because they have a lot of shows and they actually download to itunes for future easy listening. The only problem I have with it is that it only lists shows alphabetically, so you either have to know your old time radio, or you have to just throw caution to the wind and try anything.

In closing, I just want to say, don’t be a chump. Don’t pay for your radio shows. They are public domain and it is totally legal to download them for free. You can donate some bucks to your favorite website, but don’t buy the cow when you can get the milk for free!
