American Auto Makers Finally Get It!

Posted on 26 June 2008 by Jeff O.

American car makers are finally getting a clue… well kinda. Chrysler just announced today that they’ll be rolling out a service for many of their 2009 models named ‘Unconnect’. This service includes a 30 gig (why just 30 gigs???) hard drive installed in the vehicle that can be used for managing music and movie collections, saving cell phone settings to be accessed via bluetooth and providing a boost for the integrated GPS system. The coolest addition by far however is a part of the service they are calling ‘Unconnect Web’.

By partnering with a yet to be disclosed cell phone company Chrysler will able to use the partners 3G data network to get an internet signal and then broadcast it in wifi for use with laptops, iPhones, or any other wifi enabled device while on the move.

Now I know what you’re thinking… “great, people on their phones while driving is bad enough now we’re going to have to deal with some dude updating his Facebook page while on the highway?!?” but really this is an amazing service for anyone who’s work has them out on the road frequently or a touring band.

nerdI’ve had some experience with mobile internet services and I have to say I am a fan. Back in 2003, more to see if it was possible that anything else, I hacked my cell phone to allow me to use it as a modem and connect to the web using my provider’s data network (NERD ALERT!!!) and to my surprise it actually worked. I made two cross country trips sending email, chatting, and browsing the web from the passenger seat and even managed to hold down two jobs while on the road with the Dollyrots, Helper Monkeys and Groovie Ghoulies though I did tend to slur my emails towards the end of most evenings.

Long ago I had written off the idea of ever buying an American designed car (unless we are talking about an old classic car) but if they continue to bundle cool services like Chrysler’s Unconnect I might just have to reconsider… that is if the hole in the ozone layer doesn’t swallow us all up before I am car shopping again.
