Buy These Comics! (April 29, 2009)

Posted on 24 April 2009 by LoryGil

Free Comic Book Day is May 2, 2009, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy new comics this week. I know the economy is bad, but waiting for the free stuff is just rude. Plus, Free Comic Day doesn’t mean all comics are free, so you would miss out on the delectable selection I’ve picked out for you. Don’t make me go over there and pop you one. Buy these Comics!

atomic-roboAtomic Robo: Shadow from Beyond Time #1 (Red 5 Comics)

Writer: Brian Clevinger, Artist: Scott Wegener

Shadow from Beyond Time is the third adventure of the kooky, retro, robotic hero, Atomic Robo. This metal man has been on many escapades throughout the 20th century. This time, he is headed for a war with the Cthulhu, or at least some Lovecraftian-type horror. This guy’s got moxie, and he’s cute to boot. Writer Brian Clevinger has a way with alloy that makes you feel like you’re having a cup of hot cocoa while watching Rambo. Scott Wegener’s art style is perfect for an atomic-era war machine, using lots of color and imaginative expression. There is no need to read the first two adventures as this is a comic that one can jump into without feeling confused.

Ender’s Game: Battle School #5 (Marvel Comics)ender005_covcol

Writer: Christopher Yost, Artist: Pasqual Ferry

This issue ends the first arc in the series. Next stop- command school. The Ender’s Game comics are like Cliff Notes for the book. They follow Orson Scott Card’s original story with excellent continuity. My only complaint is that so much of the novelette is left out. I guess Marvel is afraid that the kids won’t like it, so they’re keeping it short and sweet. Writer Chris Yost is definitely a fan of the Enderverse. He captures the voice and attitude of the dreadfulness at Battle School. I can’t wait to see what he gives us in Command School. Artist Pasqual Ferry has done a fine job with his interpretation of the child soldiers, but to be honest, I’m hoping for a new artist in the next arc. The art team that works on the Ender’s Shadow series seems to be more to my liking. I guess I imagined the characters to be a bit more realistic and not so anime-ish. The comic is still worth a million reads.

mruniverse01_coverMr. Universe One-Shot (Image Comics)

Writers: Vassilis Gogtzilas & K.I. Zachopoulos, Artist: Vassilis Gogtzilas

Those crazy Greeks know how to write a good comic. Mr. Universe is the creative and original story of a young boy, Tommy, who is obsessed with comics, one comic in particular, Mr. Universe. His love of the caped hero teeters on the line between nerdy and downright insane, sometime crossing that line. The appeal of this comic is its character development. There are plenty of introverted comic fans who fantasize about their heroes coming to life to put those bullies in their place. Well, Tommy speaks to those masses. The writing team of Vassilis Gogtzilas and K.I. Zachopoulos is both ingenious and inspirational. The two bring a style that can only be described as indie-action meets superhero. Gogtzilas’ art fits right into that niche as well. He brings a bit of realistic impressionism to an otherwise cartoon fantasy. It’s just too bad that this is a one-shot.

MADMAN ATOMIC COMICS #15 (Image Comics)madmanac15_cover

Writer: Michael Allred, Artist: Michael Allred

Madman went through some major life changes over the past few issues, seriously. Like, the love of his life died while trying to save him and her soul fused with the nearest female entity, who happened to be his good friend. Another of his teammates was killed, but his mind was preserved. Due to some kooky sci-fi twists and a bit of mojo, all of Madman’s cohorts were put back to their original, living state just in time to be thrown into a gateway to hell. Now that things have settled down for the Atomics, a new evil is threatening to invade their lives; a cell phone salesman. Have you ever been into a Verizon store? Those guys are really scary. Creator Mike Allred has lived up to his legacy. He has kept the super powered team of the Atomics going for a long time with little slow-down. The charcoal shading and vibrant colors of each panel is a piece of art. If you have never read Madman, this may be a good jumping on point. However, you may need to get the back issues to understand the whole story.

rasl-4RASL #4 (Cartoon Books)

Writer: Jeff Smith, Artist: Jeff Smith

Writer Jeff Smith is best known for his long-running comic, Bone. If you’ve never read it, Bone is sweet and innocent, full of childlike imagery and meant for all ages. If you’ve never read RASL (pronounced rassle… ya know, like wrasslin’ or wrestling), it has the same childlike imagery, but is meant for an older audience. It’s full of fightin’ and cussin’ and killin’ and sexin’, and it looks all puffed up and cute. Don’t get me wrong, the comic is tough as nails, but Smith’s highly recognizable art style is sort of soft on the edges. It is part of the charm of this dimension-hopping story. Issue #4 starts a new arc and it is full of mystery and intrigue. If you haven’t been reading this title, you may want to pick up a copy of the newly released, RASL Vol. 1Trade Paper Back. It collects the first three, very awesome, issues so you can catch up on what you’ve missed so far.
