Buy These Comics! May 13, 2009

Posted on 07 May 2009 by LoryGil

This week is going to be a short read. I’m leaving for mom’s place for a week and have run out of writing time. Here are a few choice comics that you should buy. If you think she will enjoy them, Buy These Comics for your mom! Happy Mother’s Day.

Astro Boy Movie Prequel #1 (IDW Publishing) astro-boy

Writer: Scott Tipton, Artist; Diego Jourdan

That’s right all you Japan-a-fans. Astro Boy is back. Not only is he back in comic form, but he is coming to life in a computer graphic adventure due out this fall. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past 60 years, or if you are only six, than you should know that Astro Boy is Japan’s first comic book character. He also laid the groundwork for anime- the “gateway drug” of comics (see: Naruto or DeathNote). Although Astro Boy was created and written by the god of manga himself, Osamu Tezuka, this series is written by white-guy Scott Tipton. I guess the movie executives thought he needed Americanizing. Don’t misunderstand me; Tipton is a perfect candidate for substitute writer for Astro Boy. The comic is fun-filled and rife with action-packed adventures. Artist Diego Jourdan must have grown up on manga comics because he hits the nail on the head here. Get caught up on the story with these movie prequels and you’ll be right on target for the main event this fall.

lockpa001_cov Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers #1 (Marvel Comics)

Writer: Chris Eliopoulos, Artist: Ig Guara, Cover:  Niko Henrichon

I have two words for you, Superhero pets. What could be more fun than flying cats and giant bulldogs banding together to save humanity from certain destruction? Very little, I’d have to say, very little. Lockjaw is the Inhumans’ pet and has been a part of Marvel since the mid sixties. Writer Chris Eliopoulos is a fan of comedic story-telling, which is the perfect format to tell the adventures of a mismatched group of animals. His work on Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius is an example of his childlike love of comics. Artist Ig Guara has been penciling for Marvel for years and his depth of understanding the Avenger’s way is the icing on the cake of this sweet treat.  Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers is a whimsical tale that anyone who owns a pet, or loves comics, or is a superhero should read.

Unknown #1 (Boom Comics)  unknown-1-of-4

Writer: Mark Waid , Artist: Minck Oosterveer

By now, I’m sure you’ve realized that I have an affinity for supernatural detective stories. Well, here’s another one to add to the pile. This time, the detective is doing the “Dana Scully” thing by discrediting the paranormal angle. But, the world ain’t quite so black-and-white for the main character, Catherine Allingham, as she struggles with the unknown truth of what lies beyond death. Writer Mark Waid has been writing comics since the mid eighties, so he’s got plenty of experience to back his new comic ideas. Dutch artist Mink Oosterveer has a creative and exciting artistic style, driving things into the shadows so as to portray the dark and brooding theme of the book, while still depicting every character with definitive individualism. This is another great new book from Boom! Studios, so check it out.

With the amount of comics you buy, maybe you should just give me back those Preacher trades :)
