Buy These Comics (May 27, 2009)

Posted on 22 May 2009 by LoryGil

Now that I’ve over-powered the evil entity that calls itself “the flu”, I am back with a vengeance and a delicious selection of premier issues that you can get your grubby little hands on if you Buy These Comics!

aliens Aliens #1 (Dark Horse Comics)

Writer: John Arcudi, Artist: Zach Howard

Aliens has been a  comic title of Dark Horse for a long time, so, why you ask, are they putting out a new version? Thirtieth anniversary of the movie release of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror film Alien, that’s why. This new incarnation of our beloved, stomach-bursting, extra-headed terrestrial nightmare is penned by the creative mind of John Arcudi, co-author of the B.P.R.D.  My good friend Matt would want me to point out that Arcudi also wrote Major Bummer, but I have not read the comic, even though the aforementioned friend loaned it to me over a year ago and he probably secretly hates my guts for not giving it back to him. Do not follow in my footsteps. First off, don’t borrow the comic. Go buy it yourself. And, B. actually read it, don’t just tell your friend you will and then shove it in a box until he decides that you can’t be trusted with other peoples comics.

The Last Days of Animal Man #1 (DC Comics) last-days

Writer: Gerry Conway, Artists: Chris Batista &Dave Meikis, Cover: Brian Bolland

Animal Man was really starting to hit his stride after being reinvented during Final Crisis. But, now, we’re being flung into the future to find out about the end of his life. What about the rest of it? Maybe this crystal ball story will breathe new life (again) into this quirky yet courageous manimal and give DC a reason to keep his adventures going. This story is of an aging superhero, coming to terms with the loss of energy, stamina and even his powers. Writer Gerry Conway has captured the essence of Buddy Baker (AKA: Animal Man) and his delightful mannerisms quite nicely. Artists Chris Batista and Dave Meikis have aged the handsome hero with just the right amount of lines and wrinkles. For those of you out there creeping up on middle-age, this is just the book for you. It is a reminder that you should never stop chasing your dream, even if you have to wear adult diapers under your spandex.

rapture Rapture #1 (Dark Horse Comics)

Writer: Michael Oeming & Taki Soma, Artist: Michael Oeming

No, this is another attempt to get you to read about some mythological end-times where good triumphs over evil in the battle for souls. Oh, wait, yes it is, sort of. It is more akin to what the end of the world would be like if all the superheroes turned rotten and then disappeared.  It is also intermingled with a love story that has gone sour. Kudos to Dark Horse for distributing another creator owned title.  There is plenty of room out there for new and exciting comics that won’t get put through the ringer and watered down by guys who are past their prime and no longer have a clue as to what readers want. Writers Michael Oeming and Taki Soma are a perfect match for this, lost-love meets good vs. evil, story. Plus, they are married, so it’s cute. Give Rapture a shot. Consider it a wedding present.

Spiderman: The Short Halloween One-Shot (Marvel Comics) smshorthallow_cov

Writers: Bill Hader & Seth Meyers, Artist: Kevin McGuire

You want to talk about trying new things? Marvel is blowing my mind right now. First, they let Robert Kirkman turn all of their superheroes into zombies, and now they are letting Saturday Night Live take over Spiderman’s life for a night. Writers Bill Hader and Seth Meyers have been given the mantle for this hilarious one-shot about a drunk guy dressed up as Spiderman for a costume parade who gets kidnapped by criminals who think he is the real deal.  Hader and Meyers are threatening to write other comic one-shots if the execs at Marvel will let them, so you’d better show your support by picking up a copy, or eight . They might even end up as collector items. So you should get a whole bunch right away and then you can sell them on ebay for $50. Isn’t that worth it?

Thanks for reading. What are your favorite picks for May 27th? What about last week? Did you guys all just not buy comics since you didn’t have my brilliant advice?
