Buy These Comics!June 3rd, 2009

Posted on 28 May 2009 by LoryGil

It’s hard to believe the summer is here already. But here we are, sweltering in 95 degree heat, watching our beloved comics get all warped and faded in the back seat of our cars. Luckily, new ones come out every week. Here is a few that you should be sure to get your sweaty hands on next week.

batman Batman & Robin #1 (DC Comics)

Writer: Grant Morrison, Artist: Frank Quitely

The brilliant writing team of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely are back again, this time they are taking on the Dark Night and his acrobatic companion, Robin. Morrison and Quitely penned the Eisner-nominated, All-Star Superman and were the masterminds behind the creepy, yet beautiful We3.  Morrison tossed Batman into obscurity with Batman: R.I.P. and it is about time he helped us pick up the pieces with this all-new adventure with an all-new caped crusader in a post Bruce Wayne era of DC. This book promises to be the hype of the summer.  Let’s just hope they don’t have the same release schedule as they did with All-Star Superman. That just sucked.

Chew #1 (Image Comics) chew-1-cover

Writer: John Layman, Artist: Rob Guillory

I’m pretty sure that writer John Layman made up a new form of psychic ability, cibopathy.  Now, I’m no expert in the myriad genres of fortune-telling and palm reading, but I’m sure I have never come across someone who can read impressions from food that they ingest. Detective Tony Chu is a cibopath who will eat anything, including a murder victim, in order to solve a crime. They call him the cannibal cop.  Artist Rob Guillory adds the perfect amount of cartoony imagery to this otherwise disgusting topic. You can watch Detective Chu feast on some nasty stuff and not want to barf all over the pretty pages. Chew is another in a long line of creator owned comics being released by Image this year, but I think it is, by far, the most original detective tale I have ever come across. Give this one a try, but be sure not to eat before reading, unless you are a cibopath.

deadrun_001b Dead Run #1 (Boom! Studios)

Writers: Andrew Cosby & Michael Alan Nelson, Artist: Francesco Biagini

Dead Run is deliciously post-apocalyptic, complete with mutated beings and desolate landscapes. I get all tingly just thinking about it. Writers Andrew Cosby and Michael Nelson have managed to blend together the action and adventure of Mad Max with the timing and wit of, say, Back to the Future. Francesco Biagini is a long-time artist for the French comic company, Soliel, and he depicts the dusty outer zone of Dead Run as if he has seen it first-hand. The book reads similarly to Fear Agent, but nothing like it at the same time (I hope I’ve confused you good and solid). This comic is in a league of its own and will be a hidden joy for anyone who has dreamed of fighting the cannibalistic, gas hording dregs of what is left of society  in the dry wastelands of New York City.

Werewolves on the Moon: Versus Vampires #1 (Dark Horse Comics) werewolves

Writers: Dave Land & Matt and Shawn Fillbach, Artists: Matt and Shawn Fillbach

Let’s see now, if you were a werewolf whose powers were dictated by the phases of the moon and commercial lunar travel were possible, what would you do? I would get my butt on the next flight to the Swiss cheese in the sky and plant it where the sun always shines (making the moon full, since it is reflecting the sun, of course). That is just what the lycanthropes of this adventure have decided to do. Only problem is that the Vampire thought of it first. The old bloodsuckers decided to stake their claim on the dark side of the moon where they won’t be subject to killer sunburns. Writers Dave Land and Matt and Shawn Fillbach must have thought long and hard about what they would do if they were werewolves or vampires, because only diehard monster fans would think up something like this. That is why this comic is so good. It pays homage to horror, sci-fi and adventure all at the same time. The story of vampires versus werewolves has existed for nearly as long as the subjects themselves. But, have you ever heard of them dueling it out on the moon?  Well, now is our chance to see who would win in a fight. What’s next, Zombies on the moon?
