Buy These Comics! June 10, 2009

Summer is almost here and there is nothing better than sitting by a campfire, reading new comics. So, before you head to the mountains for fresh air and hallucinogens, make sure you Buy These Comics.

bprd B.P.R.D: War on Frogs #3 (Dark Horse Comics)

Writer: John Arcudi, Artist: Karl Moline, Cover: Mike Mignola

There are a couple of reasons why this one is on my pick this week. Fisrt of all, it highlights one of my favorite B.P.R.D. characters, Liz Sherman. Her story has been a rollercoaster of emotion. She struggles with her power and her role on the team, and it seems like someone is always trying to kidnap, curse, or kill the poor girl. She is like Hellboy’s prettier, less demon-like counterpart. In this issue, she will step it up a notch and become a leader in the war on frogs. The other thing that is pretty cool about this issue is that artist Karl Moline is taking on the task of creating images of the Mignola-esque world. Don’t get me wrong. I love Guy Davis. I think his style lends itself perfectly to the B.P.R.D., but I have loved Moline’s art ever since I read Fray and I think he portrays the heavy-hearted Liz Sherman perfectly. I’m not sure if Moline is in it for the long haul, but I DO know that Joss Whedon fans will snatch this book up quick, so make sure you get it before it sells out.

Buck Rogers #1 (Dynamite Entertainment)buckrogers-ross

Writer: Scott Beatty, Artist: Carlos Rafael, Cover: John Cassidy

Buck Rogers has been around almost as long a reading. Just imagine, Egyptian kiddies sitting around the newly built irrigation system, reading the latest Buck Rogers adventure. Well, the old space dog has been reinvented again. This time, he glows like a character from Tron and flies around with a triangle on his back. Writer Scott Beatty has some pretty big shoes to fill with this well established sci-fi legend. He seems like he is going to be able to breathe life back into the time traveling do-gooder. And with the help of artist Carlos Rafael visualizing the serial, Buck Rogers will once again be in the hearts of Egyptian kiddies for years to come.

endersgame_recruitingvalentine_cover Ender’s Game: Recruiting Valentine One-Shot (Marvel)

Writer: Jake Black, Artist: Timothy Green II

This is the first official release of what I hope will be the long lasting and wide spreading non-cannon Enderverse. Orson Scott Card’s 1985 labor of love, Ender’s Game, is fast becoming the new Star Wars Universe.  Recruiting Valentine takes place before Ender’s story begins. It is a prequel of sorts. And it is not written by Card.  No longer is the story of Andrew Wiggin and his genius siblings the sole imagining of its creator. That is not a bad thing. With the support and creative direction of Card, writer Jake Black has been given the honor of writing this original Ender tale. Black wrote the Authorized Ender Companion, so he knows what he’s talking about. Of course, no one will ever be able to compete with the brilliance behind the Ender trilogy, but it is exciting to know that others will try their hand at filling the gaps in the Wiggin Family’s history. Who knows where this will lead? Maybe we’ll see the first Endervention in 2010. I’d dress up for that con!

Red Robin #1 (DC Comics) red-robin

Writer; Christopher Yost, Artist: Ramon Bachs, Cover: Francis Manapul

Red Robin is a new addition to the DC’s post-Bruce Wayne Batman era. Or is it? That is exactly what Red Robin aims to discover. He believes that Wayne is still alive and is on a mission to find out where the bugger is. I agree with the masked stranger. I don’t believe that DC would kill off Bruce Wayne. I think the old dude is just trapped in some other dimension or something.  Maybe Red Robin will uncover the truth. Writer Christopher Yost is well versed in the art of comic writing. He’s had his mitts on a plethora of titles, including his creator-owned, Killer of Demons, which I highly recommend. Ramon Bachs adds his delicate dance with detailed imagery and fast paced action to the mix and the combo make for an exciting new title for DC’s short, but sweet, list of superheroes.
