Buy These Comics! June 17th, 2009

Posted on 12 June 2009 by LoryGil

I know some of you are saving up for the new G3s iPhone, but there are some great titles coming out next week, so makes sure you set aside some currency to Buy These Comics!

destroyerDestroyer #3 (Marvel Comics)

Writer: Robert Kirkman , Artist: Cory Walker

You may remember my review of Destroyer #1 a few months back. Well, I just wanted to remind you to give this baby a read. It is awesome. On the first panel of the first page of the first issue, Destroyer punches a bad guys head OFF. Tell me you’re not interested. I admit that issue two was a bit too much talky Mc Talkereson and not enough face punching off, but the character development has to make its way into the story somewhere. And there was some delightful killing taking place. Besides, Kirkman is known for giving you a rush of bloody mayhem followed by a plot-developing lull.  In issue #3, the Destroyer is being stalked by his arch nemesis and things are gonna get sloppy. This comic is a five issue mini-series, so you can buy it without having to worry about budgeting  $3.99 into your finances for the next ten years.

Invincible #63 (Image Comics) invincible63_cover

Writer: Robert Kirkman, Artist: Ryan Ottley

I’m trying to avoid burning you guys out on my love for Kirkman. I don’t want to be known around town as a Kirkmania whore. But just look at that awesome cover! I couldn’t pass up the chance to get everyone excited about the future of Invincible. A blood thirsty Vultrimite is ready to rule Earth. Invincible wants to stop him. The main problem is that Invincible is only a half-Vultrimite and is way younger than the 100-plus-year-old uber baddy. There is a snowballs chance in hell that he will be able to save Earth by himself. Where, oh where, is Allen the Alien when you need him? In true Kirkman fashion, we had a good six or seven issues full of character and plot development with little action. Then, as soon as good ol’ cross-over #60 hit, everything has gone to pot. Blood, death, buildings destroyed, murder. You name it, it’s happened. This is why I love Robert Kirkman. So, call me a whore. What evs.

72_marvel_pets_handbook_1Marvel Pets Handbook #1 (Marvel Comics)

Writers: Various, Artist: Unknown, Cover: Karl Kerschl

This title comes nipping at the heels of last month’s Lockjaw and the Pet Avengers, a mini-series about Marvel’s superheroes’ pets who save the world while the capes are off on some kooky adventure. The Marvel Pets Handbook is a comprehensive collection of all the pets in the Marvel Universe. I’m not usually an advocate of handbooks, but this one promises to be a fun little read. You get to learn all about the cute wittle goggies and kitteh faces of the X-Men, plus the dinosaurs, emus, gorillas, and other silly pets that those eccentric superheroes have tied up in their back yards.  This type of useless knowledge will make you very popular at parties this summer, and you could probably use all of the help you can get.

Madman Atomic Comics #16 (Image Comics) madmanac16_cover

Writer: Mike Allred, Artist: Mike Allred

Mike Allred has done an excellent job of mixing action and adventure with indie/emo comics. Issue #16 epitomizes that culmination by having the mysterious disappearance of the son of an off-world clone combined with the potential rise of a new pop legend. Madman and his team of odd-ball companions, The Atomics, are headed for rock-and-roll stardom. Who knew that these guys could play music? It is sort of like reading an issue of Archie and Friends where Betty and Jughead suddenly have a garage band and they are trying to will the high school battle of the bands. Well, The Atomics are trying to win their own battle of the bands, but what they don’t know is that the winners are destined for greatness in another dimension. Is this the timely end of Madman?
