Buy These Comics. June 24, 2009

Posted on 19 June 2009 by LoryGil

This is a bare-bones review this week. Got the new iPhone. Can’t put it down. Must get apps.

cleanersThe Cleaners #4 (Dark Horse Comics)

Writers: Mark Wheaton & Joshua Hale Fialkov , Artist: Rashan Ekedal

This is a very weird and excitingly original story full of creepy serial killers and somewhat demented detectives. Showtime’s Dexter has nothing on this Hematolagnian. The Cleaners has just a hint of supernaturalism, implications of a vampire-esque baddy develop throughout the arch, while still basing itself on realistic characters and even mundane dinner conversations. Writers Mark Wheaton and Joshua Hale Fiakov are able to draw you in with incredible suspense. Artist Rashan Ekedal depicts the life of the cleaners with just the right amount of detail. Issue #4 starts a new arch for the team of special CSI agents, and I’ll have to admit that some new stuff has come to light that puts a remarkable unnerving twist on the already mind-blowingly bizarre crime caper. This comic is a mix of gritty realism and scary unrealism and it’s perfect for anyone who reads true-crime stories and liked 30 Days of night (in comic or movie form).

Gotham City Sirens #1 (DC Comics)gotham-city-sirens

Writer: Paul Dini, Artist: Guillem March

This is the comic premise to beat all comic premises. Three of DC’s best known villainesses team up for a bit of their own mayhem. Scarecrow and Joker did it and failed. It’s about time to let the ladies handle things. Gotham City Sirens comes complete with the requisite “cat fight” (I know, I know…) as well as plenty of scratching, kicking, tumbling and… choking plants. Paul Dini is a writing machine, including his credit as a writer for Lost. He’s fast becoming the Damon Lindelof of the DC Universe. I wonder if Dini and Lindelof ever get in fights over who is better, DC or Marvel? I’m not sure if this title is meant to be a mini or on-going series, but I’m a card-carrying member of the Girl Power Club, and I want to see this comic grow as popular as possible. If I know fanboys and their dirty little minds, every issue will sell out before it even hits the shelves.

killapaloosaKillapaloosa #2 (Wildstorm Comics)

Writer: Adam Beechen, Artist: Trevor Hairsine

Killapaloosa rocks. No, really it is about a rock band named The Clap whose members are all super-powered assassins. I think I like this new trend of mixing rock-n-roll and comic books. The world is starting to recognize that not everyone over 25 years old who reads comics is a basement nerd who only listens to 64-bit music. Killapaloosa is a fun little PG-13 comic that will make you wish you had never sold your drum set to your cousin’s boyfriend. Writer Adam Beechen has a knack for going cheese-ball with the goofy nature of rock bands, which makes for a delightful read. Trevor Hairsine has a punk edge to his art that gives the story just the right amount of punch (in the nuts). Imagine what it would be like if the characters from Guitar Hero played music together, had super powers, and were killers-for-hire.
